Fleagles at the Green House

I don’t know what the Green House is, but apparently my Aunt Miriam gave it as the location of one of these two pictures. Cousin Mardi and I were sitting with her writing whatever information Mim could remember on the backs of a pile of photographs when I visited in October 2014. I didn’t hear her say it and I didn’t see Mardi write it, but I believe it was Mardi that wrote “The Green House” on the back of the first image here at Mim’s prompting. Mim said these photos were taken in the early 1940s.

The second photo is one I annotated and it is an interesting one. It is obviously designed as a “four blood generations” shot, because otherwise Jennie and Vivian would have had no reason to step out.

Four generations. Martha Jane (Harner) Fleagle, her son James, her granddaughter Miriam, and her great granddaughter Rebecca.

This photo shows four generations in the Fleagle line, though of these individuals only James was both born with and retained the name. His mother was born Martha Jane Harner to James and Susan Harner of Longville outside of Taneytown to the northwest, on the way to Harney near the Pennsylvania border. His eldest daughter Miriam married Freddie Linker (who may have been behind the camera — someone not depicted here had to take the first photo), and his granddaughter sitting on Mim’s lap here was born Rebecca Linker and later became Rebecca Taylor. – mdf

  1. Update 26 June 2015: I caught up with Miriam about “the green house”. She says that’s what she called the second house that she and Freddie lived in after they were married. Their first daughter Rebecca was a year or two old when they moved there, and the next child, Jim, “was born there”. She said it was a white house with green trim but that she always called it “the green house”. If this is that house, it looks more like it was a green house with white trim. Maybe she remembers — and the phrase recalls — a later time after the house was repainted with a new color scheme. Or maybe this was the first house they lived in. In any case, we now know the meaning of the phrase “the green house”, regardless whether this photo was taken there or somewhere else.

  2. Update 26 June 2015: My Aunt Vivian, who is in one of the photos above, remembers the house as being green rather than white. She says she would stop there on the way home from school to visit her older sister.
